It sounds as though you have had RIP routes propagated on your
local wire as a result of the ifconfig alias, but whatever gateway
to the rest of the net you use is not listening for RIP ( which
is probably a good idea, IMHO ).

Needless to say, the IPs you use for Virtual Hosts have to be routed
to you by your provider. An outside account and traceroute are your
friends in cases like these...
