You can use an AHA1540A in a PCI machine as well. :-)

There used to be VLB boards to the least that have already 72pin SIMM
slots.  Since VLB is basically crap by design, a great many of them
are certainly being used as ISA-only.

But you're right, i haven't thought about this, and it rather looks
like a plain hardware problem now anyway.
