There must be a lot of traditions. ;-)
I've always thougt it was the "c" partition that was used to reference
the whole disk. All of our Sun workstations are partitioned that way.
The only place I've seen the "d" partition reserved is in 386BSD...

But, as you say, to avoid using "b","c" and "d" partitions is kind 'a
good advise. At least if you don't know exactly what you're doing...
