You are correct in that you should not be using the "d" partition, but
it has nothing to do with DOS.  The d partition is "traditionally" used
to reference the *entire* disk, and the SCSI driver expects that.  The
"b" paritition is also "traditionally" swap, at least on the first disk.
I just avoided both of these letters and had no problem.
