Theoretically, there should be a great performance difference.  However,
my experience and that of several magazine reviews seem to think otherwise.
The 3com part seems to burn excessive cpu cycles and still perform rather
badly when compared to the equivalent SMC or Intel part.  In a nutshell, it's
better than say a 3c509, but not anywhere near one of the cards using the
DEC 10/100 chipset (I forget the silly number).
