I assume BSD/OS uses DES encryption.  FreeBSD uses MD5 encryption by
default (it's stronger than DES, and it is US-exportable code since it
can only be used for authentication purposes, not for actual
encryption).

However, you can downgrade :) your FreeBSD system to DES, using the
`securedist'.  This should make your password entries exchangeable.
