I can't seem to do anything with syslogd except use the default
configuration. Adding additional lines to change where some events are
logged does not work- it appears that syslog is not willing to create new
files in /var/log ?

If I manually create the files, it will use them, but it won't create
them if they don't exist. This breaks a lot of standard log rotating
scripts.
