Ahh, these people really needed smart software - then they could have
kept their "good thing" going.  Take a look at ijppp on FreeBSD (or some
other supporting u**x).  Your connection is always there, you just don't
use up a demon modem when you aren't actually sending packets.

But of course, in a "desktop" world......
