I fixed the problem last night...
 
Somehow, the /sys/i386/conf/files.i386 file had been truncated, and
only the NEW lines I added got in there.  That caused hundreds of
unresolved external errors when linking.
 
I got the original files.i386 from the kernel archives, and catted the
two together
and added the version[] entry, and got a new kernel OK.
