The SIGHUP looks like you are suffering from a poor modem that has
glitches on the DCD line.  I've been suffering from such a modem for
too long (DCD glitches when the line went bad, the carrier resurrected
quickly, but the glitch has already caused a SIGHUP), until i replaced
it by a ZyXEL.
