Very interesting, you must have a very different documentation set than
everyone else (Or perhaps you can read stuff that isn't there).  This is
a grep for 1542 from all the files in the distribution directory:

INSTALL.NOTES:(MFM, ESDI, IDE, SCSI - Adaptec 1542, RLL).  Also, the usual
INSTALL.NOTES:SCSI  (Adaptec 1542) controllers as well, allowing use of 3M
INSTALL.NOTES:QIC-80    supported  at this time). SCSI (Adaptec 1542) CD-ROM
INSTALL.NOTES:Adaptec 1542 SCSI Controller Configuration Information:

Notice not one mention of either the "A" or "B" suffix!  Perhaps you should
post your information!
