You can from dos, in the cdrom root dir type 'inst_ide' and boot an atapi 
kernel that will use an atapi cdrom on the secondary controller (as 
master or slave).  I used this to build a friends box.  You will need to 
install the kernel sources in the intial install, since you still end up 
with the generic kernel in the end.
