The last time I put FreeBSD on a second disk, the only way to make it
stick was to adjust the boot blocks.  Try changing
/sys/i386/boot/biosboot/table.c to say char dflname[] = "hd(2,a)/kernel"
You'll need to then "disklabel" the stuff onto your rwd0 device

Dunno about the 2.2-RELEASE installation plans.
