It's impossible.  Unless your users chose passwords that are poor
enough so you could crack(8) them...

No idea for this direction.  For the other direction, it's not that
difficult, since FreeBSD's crypt(3) does now (i.e., in -current and
-stable) understand both, MD5 and DES encrypted passwords.  (Both are
easily distinguishable.)
