I'm using a Promise 2300+ (VLB) in mine.  When I switched to this
controller (from a plain ol' cheap ISA IDE card) I had to disable the BIOS
on the card--until I did this, the machine would hang at the point where the
little twirly thing appears while the kernel is loading (just after the
Boot: prompt).
