The Handbook is pretty thorough on this. You can either browse the Handbook on 
line, or you can ust lynx or something similar to browse the one in the release. 
I got so tired of the long pathname that I set up a one-liner shell script for 
this:

lynx /usr/share/doc/handbook/handbook_toc.html

and called it showhb.

There's a whole section in there about rebuilding the kernel.
