I am having a strange problem installing NetBSD or FreeBSD on one of
my machines.

Symptom:- After hitting <Ret> to the Boot: prompt, the floppy disk is
read for about 20 seconds, then the system reboots. On NetBSD a message
C:0 H:1 S:0 ( counts to 10 ) is displayed before the reboot takes place.
FreeBSD does not show this.

Hardware: Unisys PW2/800 16MHz 386 fitted with 80387.
5 Mb memory as 1Mb plus Unisys 4Mb board.
210 Mb IDE hard disk, using patched entry in BIOS disk table, ST1239A
   818cyl, 14 heads, 36 sectors/track.
 3.5 floppy as A:, 5.25 as B:
 NE2000 Network adaptor on 280, IRQ 12.
 2 Serial + printer + games board ( internal ports disabled ).
  3E8 IRQ4, 2E8 IRQ3, lp0 IRQ7.
 Archive 60Mb DC600 tape drive on 220, IRQ5 DMA3.
 Hercules MDA display adaptor.

This configuation has worked fine with 30 + 60 Mb Dos partitions and 120 Mb
SCO Xenix. It has also worked with Slackware Linux instead of Xenix.

I first tried booting from floppy using the NetBSD image from a Nov 95 BSDisk
CD from Infomagic. When this failed I tried several floppies in case of
errors, and then tried FreeBDS also from the InfoMagic CD.

At this point I removed the Network and Tape controller boards in case of
stray IRQs etc, but this made no difference.

I then gave up and tried installing Slackware Linux, it works OK first time,
so the hardware seems to be OK. Xenix also installs OK.

Any inspirations ???.
I need to use BSD on this machine rather than Linux as it will be used
as a RARP/Bootp server for a diskless MVME143 system which apparantly
cannot be done under Linux.

When I can get past this initial hurdle I will be installing from the CDROM
which is NFS mounted from my main (Linux) server.

TIA,
