Ya got that right!  (Is anyone taking note of this?)

The system can be daunting enough to new users without having to grapple 
with problems of this nature.  I was just about ready to throw my hands up 
in disgust/despair and send the package back.

Granted, doing a kernel rebuild was quite an educational experience (and 
exciting as hell when it actually worked!), but this shouldn't be necessary 
just to make the disc useable.
