Ick.

You can work around this problem by using mgetty (it's in the ports,
watch out for ``mgetty+sendfax'').  This is a getty replacement that
does understand the concept of ``init strings''.  While i think that
this concept has a few drawbacks (like the requirement to use the
dialup tty device [/dev/ttyd*] for outbound calls, and the requirement
of correctly working tty lock files for all programs), it should save
your life with broken modems.
