This may or may not be part of your problem, but it's worth checking. If 
your original 8MB of RAM was on a single 72-pin SIMM card, it may not be 
mixing happily with a 16 MB SIMM. The problem is that the 8MB SIMM 
actually requires an odd number of address lines, so it is handled as two 
banks of 4 MB each. On most motherboards, this can only be extended by 
another 8 MB SIMM card, or not at all.

I've seen a wide range of motherboards, and they have no problem mixing 
1/4/16 MB memories, but 8 MB is an oddball and doesn't fit. I haven't 
tried, but I wouldn't wonder if 32 MB had the same problem for similar 
reasons.

In any case, you might try running with just 16 MB and see what that 
does. If it works, leave the 8 MB card out, and possibly go with another 
16 if you need the RAM.
