This seems highly unlikely to me, BSDI list all of the 3Com cards on their 
recommended list at http://www.bsdi.com/info/hardware-hints.txt, they don't 
even mention any DEC TR or 10Mb cards that list.
They also reference Paul Vixie's guide at http://www.vix.com/pc-hw which 
recommends the 3C509B as his prefered PC Ethernet solution. It seems unlikely 
therefore that they would then claim that they didn't work.

Are you sure you didn't configure a hardware address or interrupt clash 
between the ELIII and some other device in your setup. 

Although I have never setup a BSDI system with the 3Com TokenLink card, I have 
had no problems whatsoever with 3C509 (Etherlink III) cards under BSDI which 
is the problem you describe.
