Thanks!
I knew it was something along that line - setting the DTE speed 
via kermit before dialing-in fixes the problem.

Unfortunately, Zoom 14.4 faxmodem doesn't seem to be able to lock the 
DTE speed, unlike the USR Courier modems I used to have access to...  
Sigh!
