About solving the gethostby*.getanswer problem, a certain poster wrote:

I have upgraded my named shortly after this was released.
Or, is it the RESOLVER that needs changing?  This will be harder --
recompiling apps that depend on it? (-lresolv on FreeBSD)

On the other hand, if you make use of the classless DNS trick --
you're assuming that everyone else has fixed their resolvers.
