PPP works for me very fine and this since FreeBSD 2.0.5.
Now on FreeBSD-current. BTW: you describe everything very terse.
Should we guess now what's going on on your system ?!
Would be good if you also could tell the version number of your
OS, the modem you use and perhaps a short part of your ppp logfile.

In my /var/log/ppp.log I see the AT commands that are sent to my modem.
So you should easily grab these commands and try it by hand, if they
work. Otherwise you have to configure the dial prefix, that you used,
when dialing manually ...
