You should have installed the FreeBSD boot manager (you can still do
this from DOS, or you could simply re-install FreeBSD and this time
select the boot manager option for the first drive).

Using this boot manager, you'll be able to boot into FreeBSD or Linux
without hassles (I do this all the time).

You're just not quick-fingered enough - at the "boot:" prompt, type
"hd(0,a)/kernel" instead of letting it fall-through to booting off the
floppy.
