Thanks :-) It seemed better to me to put the following line in instead
though:

089 cr cr lf lf cr cr lf lf N

Now if I could only solve the emacs meta-key thing.  I have an extra
key on my keyboard (labeled 'macro') next to the left alt key, that
could be used as the meta-key (though it seems that the alt- and
shift-alt- isn't actually used for anything, except for switching
terminals, anyway).

I have found out the hard way that you can't put multi-byte
definitions in the keyboard map file, unless you like hitting the
reset button.
