What's happening is that UCB has wimped out of the battle because there's
nothing in it for them either way.  There's a letter being passed round at the
moment asking 'famous or responsible people' to write to a certain person
at Berkeley to convince the Regents that there is an important issue at
stake here.  The impression is that they simply don't care enough to get
involved.  Unfortunately when I received the letter it came with a specific
'replies received from usenet postings will not be accepted' so I can't
reproduce it here.  Don't ask me what the fuck is going on.  Somebody
somewhere has cocked things up in style.
