From what I've read and been told, NetBIOS and NetBEUI are not "routable"
protocols. (Note below that it is a "protocol".)

Machines and associated resources communicating in this way have to be
on the same network subnet.

I've also been told that their main purpose is *speed* on small networks.

Here is a snip from the NetBEUI "man" pages:

The NetBIOS extended user interface (NetBEUI) is a small, efficient
protocol optimized for high performance in smaller LANs or LAN
segments. NetBEUI is designed to support department-sized LANs that
consist of 20 to 200 workstations. It provides for both connectionless
and connection-oriented traffic on a single network segment. NetBEUI
does not support traffic across routers.

NetBEUI is self-configuring and self-tuning. NetBEUI can be installed
and bound to a network adapter card automatically when WindowsNT is
    installed.

    Important

You must install the NetBEUI protocol if your computer communicates
with other computers on an existing Microsoft network that uses NetBEUI
with WindowsNT 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, or LAN Manager 2.x. If
you do not have NetBEUI installed when your network requires it, your
computer will not be able to communicate with other computers on your
    network.

There is nothing specifically in the "man" pages about NetBIOS, except a
topic on "NetBIOS Over TCP/IP".
