The above tips got me from clueless to successfully downloading and
bringing up FreeBSD on a Dell Pentium. Unfortunately, I feel like
I'm back to clueless again!! I'm now trying to install FreeBSD on
a Gateway 4DX2-66E over the net. I've done all recommended above
[and much more] and still can't get the FreeBSD install software to
talk to any of the servers in the list. (Either direct pick or using
IP's under "other") I've got debug on in freebsd install.

Facts:
1.) My SMC wd8013ewc card responds to the setup and diagnostic software
and has [even] been configured to the exact defaults that FreeBSD install
assumes in visual mode. Currently using 280/10/0d8000 which avoids all
  conflicts.

2.) I can telnet or ftp anywhere under dos using the NCSA stuff.
  That's how I got the boot.flp and rawrite.exe files!

3.) After the "visual" session the log indicates "network device
  found named ed0..."

4.) No matter how I try to configure, and I'm positive I'm using
all the right ip #'s for router, dns, etc., all I can get is
  "device timeout"

My device timeouts stopped on the previous Dell install as soon as I
gave "visual" the right ether card configuration. I can't seem to
give it what it wants this time.

Help!
