I too have been using the "real" netmask and it works fine here (tracroute
included).

If you fire up your favorite web browser and peek at:

        http://www.uvi.edu/

You will be using a DNS CNAME record pointing to an address on a virtual
interface on FreeBSD v2.1.0-RELEASE. We just moved our web server to new
hardware and new OS (FreeBSD v1.1.5.1 to v2.1) and the virtual interface made
this a painless transistion, since I could build the new machine offline and
replace the old machine with only a few minutes downtime (almost none).
