When I used to get these on bad newsgroup creations (semicolons and such),
I used  rm -ri path*

where "path" is as much of the path as you can specify and NOT include
a strange character.  Then add the * and it will ask about all the files
and directories that match including the strange ones.  You have to
answer 'y' and 'n' until you get to the offending files/directories.
You may be asked twice about strange directory names - delete both.
