The fathers of Unix tought us otherwise.

Of course, programmers are men, they make errors and often tend to
laziness.  (``All the world's a Vax.'')  That's what makes porting
Unix kernels real work.  Anyway, Unix is the only operating system
where you can watch the porting process.  You don't see the porting
troubles Clos^H^H^H^HOpenVMS or Winbloze NT has undergone, since their
porting efforts happen behind closed doors.

You can argue how you want, but you can't deny that Unices are running
on the widest variety of hardware, from all currently existing
operating systems.
