It actually is, since it's been able to cope with technical progress.

Much unlike MessyDOS, which appeared after Unix, cloned some of the
Unix features in a miserable way (the hierarchical file system, though
they've botched the pathname separator, see also the mention of
`ioctl's in DOS), but finally got stuck in its own misdesign.  It
wasn't extensible enough.  (Certainly nobody is willing to work with a
15-year old Unix today, except for fun, but it's a matter of fact that
there has never been a major break in the development line, so you've
always been able to compile 5 or 10 year old programs on a current
Unix without too much hassles.  [With minor exceptions, of course.])
