# sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1

to enable the FreeBSD box to forward packets to the outside
world. (You can also re-compile the kernel with 'options GATEWAY', but
that's deprecated and anyway it takes longer 8-)

gated is completely over the top for this situation (IMHO).
