Help.

I've been having problems recently with my FreeBSD box. The problems
boil down as follows:

1. Talk refuses to work. /var/log/messages fills up with messages along
the lines of:

May 7 16:09:58 eddie talkd[167]: sendto: Address family not supported by
protocol family
May 7 16:10:14 eddie last message repeated 3 times
May 7 16:12:34 eddie last message repeated 25 times

I hadnt been paying much attention, so Im not sure when it stopped
working, but I'm thinking it happened shortly after a kernel compile.

This behavior occurs when two users on the machine attemtp to talk, and
when a user tries to talk another machine and vice versa.

2. Named FTPs dont work. That is, when ftp'ing into the machine, and
specifying a valid user name/passwd combo, ftpd turns around and says
530 Login Incorrect.

Ive checked the man page for ftpd - and as far as I can tell all of the
conditions are held - the login exists, the password is correct, the
login aint in /etc/ftpusers, and the shell exists in /etc/shells.

I speculate that there may be a problem in the crypt routines, but Im at
a loss as to how to test this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
josh
