You may still be able to boot from MS-DOS with the fsdboot.exe command.
This is what I do on a 386 which has a disk drive on the first IDE card
and a CD-ROM drive (Mitsumi FX 600) on a second IDE card.  A direct
FreeBSD boot always hangs, but once I boot MS-DOS fsdboot.exe works just
fine, and after the boot FreeBSD happily recognizes the CD-ROM drive.
