I received a note from someone also pointing to tcsh (thanks!), and
apparently I hadn't updated it after upgrading to 2.1R (I was still on tcsh
6.05).  I updated to 6.06 from the 2.1R CD and I think it has fixed the
problem.  I'll still check for a newer version on the ftp site though....
