I've got an HP "ST-16000" 4mm DAT 8Gb external drive using 120m tapes.  I've
never had any problems with it, but I'm running FreeBSD rather than BSDi.

You really shouldn't have any problems with DAT drives as long as they're
SCSI (is there such a thing as non-SCSI DATs ?).
