How about this.

You type in "setup" and receive a list of applications marked INSTALLED
or AVAILABLE. You arrow up and donw the list, press SPACEBAR or ENTER
(they do the same thing) and a dialog pops up asking if you want to
install/deinstall this application. Answer Y or N and it happens, then
back to the list. 

This is more or less how SCO UNIX handles installing and deinstalling
packages. Actually, they allow you to pick and choose portions of a
package and even individual files. This is useful if fsck zaps an
important binary or something or if you just want to make sure that 
your disk hasn't corrupted it.
