I am able to print remotely from one 386BSD system via another
with the following entry:

lp|local line printer:\
<tab>:lp=:sd=/var/spool/lpd:lf=/var/log/lpd-errs:rm=worm:rp=lp

where <tab> is a tab character. The spool directory is evidently wrt
the local machine (as I understand it), so the sd entry might be the
source of your problem.
