Well, I have 640x480x256 working.  The problem was my mouse was
set to /dev/tty0 instead of /dev/com1.  I changed this, changed
the mouse type from logitech to microsoft (it's a Dexxa+ mouse
and is supposed to act like a Logitech, but it didn't work right),
and removed all modes except "640x480".  It works, but of course
I'd rather have 1024x769 available.
