Well, the problem (thanks to Andras Olah) turned out to be my own
bone-headedness.  I had

> controller	wdc0	at isa? port "IO_WD1" bio irq 14 vector wdintr

But the "disk wd2 ..." line is telling the kernel to look for a hard
drive there - no wonder it was dying.  Take that line out and suddenly
I'm listening to glorious audio.

Hope this gets archived and helps anyone else who is similarly
clue-deficient.
