EMMV (Everyone's mileage may vary).

I've had stable SCO, UnixWare and Linux boxes, and I've also has some
of all ilk that crash under this or that particular combination.

With Linux, things are a little touch-and-go, since you have to be
careful to use one of the 'officially-stable' kernels (ie 1.2.X).
Anything else is glorified beta testing without having to sign anything.

Each has its strengths. Each has its weaknesses. Different solutions
will excel for different problems. They key is flexibility.

Or not. No vendor or user community has stress tested every possible
combination.
