OK, I'm getting frustrated here.... I posted a message about this about 3
weeks ago, but didn't get any response. Anyway, I'm having trouble
getting a 3Com 507 ethernet card working on a Dell 425TE computer. This
is a EISA 486 25MHz system. I have it set up as a dual boot machine,
with both Linux (Slackware 3.0) and FreeBSD 2.1 installed. (One on each
SCSI hard drive) Now, after much installation frustration, it is now
running Linux just fine, but I am having difficulty with the FreeBSD.
The main problem is that 95% of the time, the system completely freezes up
when it tries to ifconfig the ie0 interface. (it locks up to a point that
the NumLock key won't even toggle) The other 5 or so percent of the time,
it configures just fine, and I can ping other machines on the network.
The other problem is that when the system is being rebooted, it locks up
the same way, instead of reseting the computer (after the system
has shut down completely). Sometimes, it manages to reset and starts booting
automatically just fine, but again, about 95% of the time, it just
freezes up, and I have to hit the reset button. Now the two problems
seem to be related, since if the computer manages to reset by itself,
I'm also able to ifconfig the ie0 interface without any problems.
Could ANYONE suggest what to do about this? This behavior does NOT
exist under Linux, and I'd like to get it resolved under FreeBSD.

btw, the complete hardware spec is as follows:

486 25MHz EISA
16MB RAM
DTC SCSI host adapter (running in adaptec compatibility mode)
3Com 507 Etherlink 16 Ethernet adapter.

thanks for any suggestions you might have....
