Some years ago, there was a law which required electronics manufacturers to
supply detailed schematics for their products. They were allowed to charge
a nominal fee for this information.

When I bought a Sony Beta recorder, I ordered the Maintenance Manual for
about $30.00. This was amazing. Each printed circuit board was shown with
the components identified in X-ray format. This permited me to follow the
circuits as they went from one side of the board to the other.

Each signal was identified with its purpose and had oscilloscope samples of
how it should look.

To top it off, they included a poster size schematic of the entire circuit
on plactized linen.

Reecently, I purchased a Maintenance Manual for my AST computer and a
developers manual from ATI for the Mach 32. Each for around $60.00.
However, they managed to omit some very important information about getting
the two to work together on my computer. Partly because AST included some
"proprietery" circuitry and had a special version of the Mach32. Neither
manufacturer will tell me the "secret" needed for me to utilize the
hardware I had purchased.

They have deprived me of the full use and pleasure of the machine I paid
for.

Similar events occured with my Colorado Memory Tape machine, my APC Smart
UPS.

What ever happened to that full disclore law??
