UUCP can, but it requires some setup, so it's recommendable for
connections on a regular basis rather than casual needs.  OTOH, it's
the best existing batch file transmission system at all.  (Not
surprising, given its long history.)

For the casual users, ``modem program'' like kermit or the Zmodem
suite (sz/rz -- caution, recent versions are shareware!) are better
suited.  There's also Seyon, a communications program that runs under
X11 with a nice user interface.
