OK.  Qualify that as "XFree86 does not work PROPERLY with these boards".
One of the features of XFree86 (and its X386 ancestors) is that ability 
to switch displayed resolution via hot-key sequence.  This capability
is badly impaired by the clock problem.  25 and 28MHz clocks are not
going to work for much more than 640x480 (unless you like a lot of
flicker in your display).
