Yechh, don't use SLIP.  Somewhere in the ppp.configure files and samples 
is info on setting teh timeout delay for tun0; which can be set to zero 
to eliminate the timeout.

The messages you see, FYI, are root informational messages that go to the 
root console whenever BSD figgers something noteworthy has transpired -- 
like "user bozo flubbed logon tty3" and other stuff like that.
