I have a Logitech mouse, model number MB-82-9F.
I had similar problems to what you describe.
I got it to work by putting the following in my XConfig:

	Microsoft "/dev/com1"
	Emulate3Buttons

Comment out the BaudRate and SampleRate stuff, they seem to screw it up.
