the ie0 driver for the NI5210 network card hangs my machine soon after 
ifconfig is run in /etc/rc

ie0: too many collisions

FreeBSD recognises the card fine, with the correct Ethernet address even. 
What is wrong? The MTU (=1500)? i can't think of anything else that could 
be at fault.
